It's become a thing, lately, where a coffee shop claims to transcend being a place to get coffee. Its not a Cafe, or a coffee house - its a cafe/juicery/brasserie/bar/lounge/wifi haven - and you can feel how hard that business is trying to be cool. It's happening everywhere.
Every now and then, though - a coffee shop surprises you. Sometimes the vibe of the place is as focal as the food and drink, and they're not shoving it (the vibe, or their food) down your throat.
Amsterdam's Coffee & Coconuts - also called C&T - got it right.
It's right off the corner of Ceintuurbaan St in the trendy De Pijp neighborhood, and hard to miss located in a 1920's era theater. Even on a cloudy day in Amsterdam, C&T feels bright and airy; sky high ceilings, a lofted dining area, bright white mixed with brick, and plants everywhere.
Maybe the feel of the space helps transition the menu from early morning coffee to boozy happy hour. You can lounge on cushy white couches, sit at tiny (and classic) cafe tables, work on a laptop at giant communal table, or even eat with friends at a 4-top table suspended by rope from the vaulted ceiling. The 'chill' vibe is very real here.
Start your morning here with coffee + breakfast, then head out on your bicycle to see the city the way Amsterdam locals do! Oh, and if you can't immediately get to Amsterdam, you can live stream their C&T 'radio station' to get the good vibes at home. Seriously, scroll down on their 'About' page and press play.
The menu has a fresh + healthy theme running through it. Not surprisingly, there are several ways to eat coconut here (coconut milk is an option in your coffee, in juice smoothies, and as an element in a few other lunch/dinner options), but there's so much more than coconut!
Check out the menu for yourself here, it's extensive! If you just want a greatest hits sampling, here are few...At breakfast, try a coconut milk latte with the full CT breakfast (scrambled eggs with avo, CT's granola, fresh strawberries and coconut pancakes). Around lunch, try the Skin-On potato salad (with romaine and poached egg, mixed asparagus, two year old gouda cheese and creamy parsley remoulade) and a Strawberry Masala Lassi juice (trust). Happy hour? Choose beer or wine (plenty of options), CT's Nacho Libre, or the Koji BBQ taco.
Hey - you're drooling, FYI.
